This week will be referring to an article in Pediatrics: Official Journal Of The American Academy Of Pediatrics. This Article is called Exposure to Degrading Versus Non degrading Music Lyrics and Sexual Behavior Amoung Youth and it is written by Steven C. Martino, PhDand Rebecca L. PhD. A study was done to see how teen are effected by non degrading sexual lyrics verses sexually degrading lyrics. Teen with more exposure to sexually degrading lyrics are more likely to partake in earlier sexual behavior. I understand why this could be true. In my opinion sexual lyrics alone are not enough. When you are being degraded your self esteem will be attacked. When you self esteem is attack you are more willing to do thing to fit in. The degrading lyrics along with the sexual lyrics seem to set a norm or expectations that teens feel like they need to abide to. If the norm is everyone is having sex and putting down women impressionable teenagers will do the same. I feel like just sexual lyrics don't make the teenagers feel insecure about being sexually active.
